Laurie Hernandez, the 21-year-old gymnast who won team gold and balance beam silver at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has announced her retirement from the sport. Hernandez was the youngest member of the U.S. women's gymnastics team at the Rio Games, and her performance helped the team secure their first Olympic gold medal since 1996.
Hernandez was born in Old Bridge Township, New Jersey, and began gymnastics at the age of 5. She quickly rose through the ranks, and by the age of 16, she was competing at the international level. Hernandez was a member of the U.S. team that won the gold medal at the 2015 World Championships, and she also won the individual all-around title at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.
